In this drop-in workshop series, we'll explore ways we connect to place and to each other. Ensemble theater is about being in relationship with each other, our feelings, our space, amd our world. Let's use our artistic practices to facilitate greater awareness, accountability and change for the world in which we wish to live.

WHAT OUR TRAINING LOOKS LIKE

FoolsFURY is deeply interrogating its past training practices. We recognize our practices are rooted in oppressive systems which use body shaming and words like “rigor”, “training” and “excellence” to signal value and promote competition which is in opposition to ensemble theater creation. We're committed to transformational training practice that supports a new era of theater.

New models of theater practice at the intersection of aesthetic equity and artistic excellence. What does liberated theater feel like from inception to performance? How can we create models for shared liberation that celebrates difference while striving for greater equity and inclusion?

FoolsFURY is striving to center our humanity in everything we do and make. We’re drawing a new template for our field over the next several months that includes professional trainings, public discussions and the Ensemble Liberation Lab Architects, a cohort of early-career, queer BIPOC artists, who will gather in 2021 to play, design, test and share their latest discoveries with the field.

How will building intentionally stronger foundations of justice beget deeper, more inspiring theater that connects authentically with each one of us?

Stay with us to find out.

WE WELCOME all interested folks of any experience and ability, especially those who may be underserved or have not yet had the privilege of accessing certain trainings through a traditional university setting. We practice creating community held in the values of mutual support, greater equity, physical autonomy and better practices for social justice in our society. Ensemble theater training is a means for social change and we need YOU in the room to help change oppressive systems. If you have ways to improve our practice, please let us know.

OUR CORE curriculum combines rigor, creative inspiration and thoughtful composition work. Solo, partner and group work will be explored and shared. Training will include (and is not limited to) The Viewpoints, Suzuki Method of Actor Training, and composition work with text, as well as vocal training for speech and singing. No experience is necessary in any form taught, however experienced students may be further challenged.

TEAM TEACHING: foolsFURY often collaborates with 1-2 experienced company member instructors over the course a workshop, or with single teachers leading specific exercises. FoolsFURY company members train alongside workshop participants. Group conversation and individual participation of every student is encouraged and necessary for the process. Company members and other participants may also contribute from time to time.
