Founded in 1998 in San Francisco, FoolsFURY’s mission is to revitalize the American theater by:
Creating ground-breaking visceral performances that inspire audiences and artists to reconsider and reconnect with the world around them,
Centering artists and voices from BIPOC and marginalized communities,
Emphasizing the qualities of theater that can be experienced live and providing a platform for accessible digital presentation,
Advancing artistic dialogue through accessible training, research, and presentation.
About Us
FoolsFURY is a San Francisco based performance ensemble. Named the city’s “Best Theater Company” by the SF Weekly (2008), and awarded the SF Bay Guardian’s GOLDIE award for outstanding local theater group, we place a premium on the creation process, spending longer periods developing our work than is the norm in mainstream American theater. We invite the public (you!) to view the work at various stages of development, engaging our audience as partners in exploration as well as consumers of a final commodity.
Our acclaimed productions include numerous original works and world premieres, as well as deconstructed classics. Training the public and educating the next generation of theater artists are also key components of our mission. We offer a year-long apprenticeship program and internship opportunities. In recent years we have begun to focus on touring, in order to bring our work to a broader audience, give our creations a longer lifespan, and take a greater role in the national dialogue about the future of theater.
We are also the producers of the FURY Factory festival of ensemble and devised theater, a biennial gathering of performing artists from around the Bay Area and the world. Since its inception in 2005, FURY Factory has become one of San Francisco’s most exciting cultural events, a diverse and accessible home for audiences and artists. We offer master class workshops, industry convenings, and some of the most compelling new works by more than 25 innovative, risk-taking companies from around the country, and from as far away as Afghanistan and the UK.
