A seemingly benign ceiling tile falls in a meeting room, acting as a mysterious catalyst for social change. As the building deconstructs, so do the long-held beliefs of our librarians. When the forces of nature take over the building, new ideas are initiated, computers set aside, protocols abandoned. Suppressed stories are revealed and ancient voices are heard.
The Library Project is a world premier play and community development project for a world in unprecedented transition. Using immersive theater, multimedia installation, engaging text, dynamic movement and song, audience members will experience a reimagined future for California through the lens of a library and its staff. As the building dismantles itself, the characters dismantle their assumptions about their role in how stories are kept, classified, and shared.

The Library Project is a celebration of our varied interconnected stories. An integral part of our process for this project is to center human connections and relationships, and lift up underrepresented voices. Our project is comprised of 60% BIPOC/LGBTQ+ artists and includes an Indigenous Cultural Consultant to work with us in disrupting and deconstructing the American narrative. Throughout our process we recognize agency and role fluidity as strengths to leverage in rehearsal. The Library Project is produced in partnership with Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, Kanyon Konsulting, LLC, Z Space, San Francisco Grants For The Arts, Bernard Osher Foundation, and generous individual donors.
