The Devil on All Sides
by Fabrice Melquiot
Directed by: Ben Yalom
Translated by: Ben Yalom
Produced by: Angie Bush (SF) and Angela Santillo (NYC)
The American premiere of contemporary French playwright Fabrice Melquiot’s haunting tragedy is set during the war in ex-Yugoslavia. Lorko, a Christian, falls in love with and marries Elma, a Muslim. As the war breaks out, Melquiot shows us the pressures on their love, their families, and the crumbling world around them in a style that seamlessly blends expressionism, poetry, fantasy, and harsh, raw reality. Named “Theatrical Discovery of the Year” in France. Our production extended twice, and toured to New York’s PS 122 in 2007.
“Beautifully realized in every sense.”
